Godolphin Edwards Relief in Need Charity

The Godolphin Edwards Fund started as the Godolphin Edwards Relief in Need Charity, (registered number 244238), many years ago.  The fund was to ‘relieve either generally or individually persons resident in the parishes of Acton Burnell, Frodesley, Pitchford and Langley & Ruckley who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress by making grants of money or providing or paying for items, services or facilities calculated to reduce the need, hardship or distress of such persons.’

Due to changes in Charity Commission guidance, and the obligations that are now placed on trustees, the trustees of the fund wanted to take a step back.  After seeking advice from a solicitor, they were given the option of transferring the fund to the Community Foundation.  As an officially recognised, and quality accredited, community foundation, we were able to take over the management of the fund and ensure that it continues to benefit people long into the future.  This is partly due to the work we undertake on the ‘Revitalising Trusts’ initiative, in partnership with the Charity Commission.  In order to be part of this initiative community foundations must be members of UKCF and have achieved a pass in UKCF’s quality accreditation scheme.  This helps to ensure that the services provided are of a high standard and gives donors and partners an assurance that their funds will be managed properly.  The management of Godolphin Edwards Fund transferred to the Community Foundation for Shropshire in 2023.

The Godolphin Edwards Fund is an endowment fund, which means the money in the fund is invested, and the returns are then used to award grants to the community.  Grants are available to organisations who are working to provide services or facilities to residents of Acton Burnell, Frodesley, Pitchford, Langley & Ruckley.
